I'm trying to do something different with my paintings while still keeping the same style that appeals to me visually. I want to use a phrase I recently said to a friend, "I'm tired of trying to live my life crawling through this picture someone has painted of me based on what he is going through," to be the basis for the group of paintings. I want the art to show the struggle of being downed by criticism and what others say, to change into starting to believe in myself and finally just simply being who I am. The first painting is this one, if you look close you can see that it's "raining criticism", pretty literal interpretation and not at all subtle with the withering flower. But, it does appeal to me. (What can I say, I am a simple person.)

This is actually the 3rd painting, but it is larger than the other two and I want it to dominate the grouping. It's self explanatory and I may not put any text on it. Not sure yet. I just want it to be bright and simple and happy, which is something I've tried to put into many of my paintings. Obviously not finished.

And this is the 2nd. I'm hoping people will read the group as they do a monogram, left, right, center. This one is the coneflower starting to bloom "learning to breathe". Trying to see myself outside of this image that men or people paint of me based on their lives. I like who I am better if people look at me clearly, rather than muddied by what they want to see or what they have lived. I think the trick is seeing myself clearly and not worrying about others. Easier when not in bad relationships. Ahh...the actual joyful part of being single! I need to look at this painting again tomorrow in natural light. The lighting in this house is horrid. It looks muted, which is what I want, kind of a muted, but bring spring look, but then I take it into different light to photograph it and aaahhhh too yellow!

Making time to paint lately, it helps me stay sane...at least at the level of sanily/insanity I'm at already. G and I drove up Hwy 62 this afternoon and stopped at about 5-6 pet stores/groomers. Really good response to my pet jewelry and tags. One new client and the rest are all interested, just need to follow up with the management. Course, the first step is getting them in the stores, the 2nd is getting clients to purchase them.

It's one am, I should probably go to sleep. Trying to go through the notes on my thoughts throughout the day and piece together an idea for these paintings. I want to incorporate images that appeal to me and try to explain why. I can't figure out how to do it without incorporating words, but then I realized a while ago, that my poetry is much more personal than my paintings. I think there are reasons I paint what I do and why it appeals to me, but I don't think it shows in my work. Is it too simple to include words? Am I overdoing it starting with the order that I crave, including thoughts in text and adding the visual feeling. I don't know. It's something new. I'll give it a shot and see how it turns out.

Dropped off displays and pet tags/jewelry at Rogue River and Grants Pass retail stores today. I also took time to photograph the Jacksonville Courthouse in the morning light and then again in late afternoon. I'm trying to get shots for the promotional material for Jville Celebrates the Arts.

Staying Sane During the Creative Process

So today the goal is to record my thoughts throughout the day and see where it takes me. I want my paintings to become more personal. But that is seriously scary! I was chatting with a friend about how difficult it is to date men who are healthy enough to see me. Here's my comment:

"I'm tired of living my life trying to crawl through this picture someone has painted of me based on what he is going through."

I want to somehow take that statement as well as other thoughts and incorporate it into my work. That has been my lifelong struggle, how to be in a relationship without becoming crazed and lost. And by writing down my thoughts....my day is getting away from me. The ugly truth:

I actually dread going to this place creatively where my emotions are unprotected. My work is so much better, but allowing the time and energy to go there is difficult. I know that I can crank up music, start talking or thinking and be there, emotionally wrapped in my thoughts, analyzing and trying to solve, clarity at times. It’s hard to go about normal life after moments like that. I either want too much from people, ie to be there, keep talking, listening, sharing. Or I just want to be alone and introverted. It’s weird because my emotional side makes people nervous, you can see them drawing away from it at times, but they are also drawn to it. People tell me I inspire them and I can almost feel them sapping my energy at times, wanting to talk and me to listen, wanting to be inspired and supported. No easy answer. I spent most of my life hiding from it, working in a stressful, serious job so I could be this controlled human. But, going there emotionally, letting down the guard, makes me stronger and healthier, and also a lot more vulnerable. Living my creative life is not easy or simple. It takes more bravery than I had imagined. Daily criticism followed by amazing highs. Trying to stay focused on the business side, but needing to get away and allow myself the freedom and strength to create. Trying to get the comments out of my head and just listen to myself. That, I think, will be the most difficult part, continuing to listen to myself and believe that what I have to say is valid and relatable.

And...you can see how just making the decision to record my thoughts throughout the day...has sent my brain spinning. This...is what is easier to avoid than to grab on to. And life beckons..

Day after Day...

Today I went to Ashland to check in with some of my retailers. Stopped at Thomas Lee Gallery and snapped a pic of my necklaces. Love that gallery, fabulous art. Then went to Love Revolution and traded out the Valentine's necklaces for custom ones that have hearts on the front and their logo on the back. They will make great gifts, I hope their clients respond well. That is a really cool store too. Yes, a sex type of store, but it so focused on sensuality and romance...with all the fun stuff in the back room. ;) Also stopped at Crown Jewel to drop off some more pet jewelry, they had done a really good job of placing my display. I appreciate it when retailers do that, it makes such a difference in sales. And last, stopped at Ashland Pets to change out their display for one with a personalized pet tag. All in all a good, productive morning, followed by hummus and chips from the co-op. Yum.

And then I spent the afternoon at Art du Jour. Immy is starting to think it's her second home. We walk in and she runs around and wags hello to everyone, helps herself to Prince's food and water and then lays down and sleeps. Nice. Talked with Margo about the Third Friday map, upcoming Jacksonville Celebrates the Arts and got some helpful critique on my paintings. I told her I NEEDED a critique group. I guess it's something she's thought of putting together before, so I am really hoping it gets off the ground. I hate rejection but really do respond to helpful, constructive criticism. With this creative block...i really need it!!

And spent the night working on ideas for the new paintings. I keep looking at the circles and lines I started with. Visually I am so drawn to charts and graphs. That is where my retail design started, the one from the Int'l competition. I feel like I want to do something along those lines, but in a more personal way. I'm thinking about writing down my thoughts throughout the day and looking for patterns. Part of my draw to the order of graphs is that my mind goes in so many directions, scattered, creative, crazy (?). I like order contrasted with reality. Not sure where this will go, but at least I'm moving forward in my art. I want to do something that continues with the style I am drawn to, but becomes more personal, has meaning in my life. I also keep thinking about Alzheimers, doing something that relates to G's blog and working through the disease artistically. It might help.

Found out a close friend has breast cancer. I know that has nothing to do with my art, but it does. Stuff like that makes you fear the fragility of life. I know she will come through it, she's a strong woman. I will be pray daily and appreciate every moment of life where I have the joy of painting and creating.

Still bored....and still not sure what I'm doing with this painting. I haven't had a creative block in a long time. Ugh. I bought a book a few months ago called "Thinking Creatively, New Ways to Unlock Your Visual Imagination". Am going to dive into it tonight, hopefully it will help. I don't even know why I feel bored because I do have so much to do. I need to update the Third Friday Medford map for March, adding another street block in perspective and hopefully find a local restaurant that will do some type of green sample food in Vogel for the art walk. I also met with my friend Jeannena yesterday. She's my source for all things Jacksonville. She asked me if I would do the promotional material for Jacksonville Celebrates the Arts. I'm excited about the project although I've never done anything like that before. Of course my first question was...."can I use my art in the flyers"? One track mind...getting my name out there so my business will grow. Sometimes I feel pushy or driven but others I give myself a break and acknowledge that I'm in survival mode. I can either figure out how to build my creative self into a business that will support my future, or I can go back to work in an office. I think I would wither away and die if I sat in an escrow office again.

Tonight I realized I was bored. This is not a feeling I've had very often in my life. I think it's because my art is a little unbalanced right now. I've been working on the business side of my art and haven't taken the time to create. So I jumped in....not sure yet where this is going but at least it's headed somewhere!

I'm planning to go to the Grants Pass Art Walk for the first time on March 2nd from 6-9. Artist friend Cindy Kahoun, who is the director at Gallery One is a featured artist. I love her work. Hope some of you from Medford and Jville will have a chance to head down.

This is the flyer for this Third Friday's Art Walk in downtown Medford. We're trying to build interest by highlighting special events each month.

This is February's map. I'm making a list of changes that I want to make by next month, but for a first run I'm happy with it. If you are a downtown merchant and have something to add, please contact me. The goal for this gallery map is to include any retailers who stay open for the Art Walk and specifically highlight anything that reflects the art in our area.

In the end, I HATED the styrofoam wig heads as displays. So now I'm trying to cut out a silhouette and see how that works.

I have two painted. One is black, one is silver. I think I like the black one better, although it doesn't show up well in this photo. I'm still debating on the head, it overtakes the display. I may chop it off and just leave a partial neck.

So I chopped off their necks in photoshop. Hmm.....still not sure what I think, but my initial thought is that I like it better. "Off with their heads!"

Third Friday Art Walk Map

Today was an interesting day. I've been working on a map for the downtown Medford galleries for the Third Friday Art Walk. I was at Art du Jour today for my co-op one-day-per-month workday and was able to get outside for a bit, so I took the opportunity to visit the local businesses shown on my map. The goal was to find out which businesses stay open for the Art Walk, which is 5-8 pm on the third friday of each month. I met some great people, but also walked into a few hornet's nests. The good thing is....I hate politics, even small town politics, so was able to plead "new girl in town" innocence....which in fact I am. I have managed thus far to avoid getting involved. Anyway, I hope the map helps get people to the downtown area. I think i will pass them out around the area, try to build some interest.

Styrofoam Heads

Today was a good day. I stopped by a few of my retailers and dropped off the dog displays. I love the response. I hope the customers have a good response as well. I have some new ideas spinning around in my head. I wish I had enough time for everything I want to do.

I just got my styrofoam wig heads in the mail. I'm so excited! This is the start of displays for my necklace/card sets.

Happiness

I felt so happy today!! When I started my art business almost 3 years ago, I would go out on the apartment deck, set up my table saw on the floor (it barely fit) and piss off the neighbors by hammering and sawing to build my canvases. Not only did I annoy everyone around me but it was pretty unsafe. Today I just finished building a table for my miter saw, a table for Mom's scroll saw and a work table. The work table is even big enough to build a canvas on top of, no more nailing on the floor!

Not only does this hugely impact my art business, but on a personal level I feel like I'm home. In the past years, whenever life felt lonely (often) or cold, I would think about working in my dad's woodshop at the Winchuck with the sun shining. I've often missed how simple life was back then. Today, standing in G's garage, realizing that my parents and Gramma have given me back my security and peace. I have a woodshop and studio. I have sunshine most days. I have people who love me closeby. I think the only thing missing is my girls. I miss them terribly.

I spend so much time in Home Depot with all of my projects they are starting to recognize me (poor them). ;) These are Dianne and Brandon. I forced them to pose for me. It is people like this who help me build my business, whether they realize the extent of their help or not.

And even while taking pics of the workbenches....what I notice are the vertical lines of the tables and the shadows from the sun. Cool graphics.

Delivering the Immys

Immy came with me to deliver the first round of Immys. We had a great response, which makes me so happy. It's hard to design something and then wait to see the response. We went to Medford and Ashland today. Dropped off Immys at two retailers and got orders for 2 more. Yay! That means two new retailers! I'm up to 16 now and my goal for 2012 is to have 25. Hopefully I will exceed that goal.

Immy needs a fluff cut. She cracks me up though, so funny. She was posing, like she knew she was supposed to, but the sun was in her eyes, so most of the shots looked like this. It cracks me up that she just kept posing but closed her eyes.

Working on the Immys

I have six of them done. Finally!! I just need the pet tags, which might be here tomorrow. Then I will package them, hang a few on the collar and take them to my retailers. Happy, happy!

The Good and The Bad

First for todays "positives". My paintings at Art du Jour. Was so happy to have some of my larger pieces up.

I almost tripped walking into the gallery when I saw my painting in the window. I wasn't expecting that. Nice surprise.

And I changed a few paintings at Organic for my final month of the exhibit. Now for the "negatives". Ugh, why do I let this stuff get to me so much? My goal for 2012 was to submit for 5 different gallery exhibits. I got two rejections in one day. And one was from BAM, which is the art museum I really wanted to be part of. The skin gets thicker and thicker...

Surrounded by Immys

I think this will be her logo. I'm making a webpage for her, but it's going to be on mine, rather than a separate website. There's only so much I can handle. I wanted it to have a similar look to mine, so I used a petal from the flower of my logo and distorted it for the background. I may play a bit with the size of the pawprint and maybe the outline. I tried so many fonts! I think I like this one though.

Still working on the prototype but I think I'm getting closer. I like the size of this one. I like using an actual photo of Immy rather than just the silhouette. I think I'm going to paint the bowl silver. Once I get this figured out, then I will need to start making them, Immy after Immy after Immy. I wonder if I will get all Immy'd out?

I also made a big change to my marketing plans. I'm going to market the pet tags and any future pet products under the Where's Immy? name. What can I say, people are more drawn to Immy than my art. ;) So, I will combine the two. Maybe cammydavis.com for Where's Immy? Hmm...awkward. I'll figure it out. No wonder I feel like my brain is spinning all the time and I can't remember anything. It really is.

Wig Head as Necklace Display

I also need to come up with a display for my necklaces. I want to do something similar to the concrete wig head I have in my room. The one I use to photograph my necklaces. I am considering getting wig heads, texturizing them and painting them, probably silver knowing me. But then, I need something to hold the necklace and card sets. This is my first attempt.

I don't want to make it so big that it will deter retailers from putting it on their countertops. Originally I wanted to put two rows of the card sets, but I think that would just be too wide. So, I went with one. But I only made it 4" deep. I'm going to try it at 6 inches and see how that looks.

The actual wig head will be smaller at the base than my concrete one (the concrete kept dripping down the wig head so it became wider at the bottom.)

And most of the day I've spent trying to make friends with the scroll saw and making another attempt at the pet tag display. I'll get there someday! I enjoy the creative process, the part that scares me is having to make the same thing over and over after I finally get the design finished. Ugh, I hate doing something more than once.

Who Needs to Clean Her Room?

I think I have about five projects going at one time in my room. Sigh, I feel like a teenager, a messy teenager. Anyway, still working on the dog display. I have decided for one thing, that I'm going to make it about 1/3 smaller. I went to Home Depot today and looked at different ideas for texturing the display. In the end, I went back to what works for me....mod podge and tissue paper. I don't know how it's going to turn out until I paint it, but I think it's better than it was. I want to try the silver, ultimately that's the color I want to use, but I may have to try black if it's shine shows all the textural changes.

I'm also starting to think about doing a display for my necklaces. I like the idea of the concrete wig head I did for myself, which is what I use to photograph my necklaces for my etsy site. So I think I'm going to start with wig heads, but need a different finish. Hmm...

And I also worked on some custom ideas to show to the retailers.

Painted silver. I think I like it! I may add texture to the bowl as well. I don't want to, I like the contrast in texture, but it's so easy to see every little inconsistency when it's smooth. Can't wait for the paint to dry so I can put the collar and tags on and see how it looks finished.

I think it's actually getting worse rather than better. I decided the silver looked like tin foil so painted it black. Sigh, probably time to sleep on it, hopefully my subconscious will come up with something better than my fully awake brain did.

Building a Display for my Pet Tags

I'm working on a way to display my pet tags because I think it will help sell the product. I figured otherwise they are small and will get lose on the shelves. Hopefully this way retailers will consider placing them on the counter or someplace where they will get noticed. So...I've been turning the ideas around in my head for about a week and it's finally coming together. Can't wait to see how it looks when it's finished.

Of course I had to add texture...because, well...I just HAD to! Figuring out the dog bowl was the most difficult. Wood that bends? Not so easy. After Home Depot snapped a bunch of thin wood trying to find something that would make that tight of a bend, I gave up and went to the pet store. Chopped some doggy bowls in portions and tried that. Had the right look, but didn't attache very well and looked kinda "crafty"...which is something I try to avoid. So after wandering through store after store, I finally decided to try the round tubes that you use for pouring concrete posts. It's working!

Course I have to modpodge it to get it smooth.

And be patient while it dries (never been my strong suit), then I will paint the entire thing silver (of course) and put black webbing for the collar and finally attach a bunch of the pet tags and jewelry. Oh, I also need to put something on the back of the display that will hold the post card order forms for personalization and also something "about the artist" so the retailer/staff will be familiar with the fact that these are tags made with art.

Well, not as happy after painting the silver. It shows all the textural differences. I'm thinking of getting silica sand to add to the paint and I might end up changing the color to black.

I do like the way it's turning out, if I can solve the textural issues. I want it to look artistic but not craftey and handmade. Ugh. Of course, once I get it figured out, then I get to make one for every retailer that will be selling my product. Forget painting, no time to create!

New Logo Almost Done

Well, I think this is it for the new logo, although I'm still not sure. Ugh. I do want to paint the text portion so once I do that I guess I'll know.

Now that Immy has her "I heart art" tag, it makes me laugh even more when she poses by my art. I did sit her down for this shot, but often when she sees me with camera in hand she'll come running and turn towards the camera and be still. It's so funny. What would I do without Immy to make me laugh?

And this is the painting I'm working on now. Part of my 2012 goal was to enter 5 contests so I keep browsing through the calls to artists. The subject for this contest is completely unlike me, but the graphic ideas that came to mind interested me. I love simple, linear shapes, geometrical shapes and bright, contrasting colors. I'm going to leave this painting really simple, enter it and see how it does. I'm not sure if I'll ever post the entire piece.

Tonights Medford Art Walk

I love it when I pull out the paper and my name is in it. :) Doesn't happen often. Anyway, tonight is Medford's friday art walk and my work is in three places downtown. Art du Jour, Organic Natural Cafe and the Rogue Gallery. I won't be there sadly, because there is no one to stay with Grams tonight, but I hope a lot of people stop in at the galleries to check out all the art and Organic for dinner! The art work show in this article is by my close friend Boni Kettering. So different than my style, but so beautiful. I really respect artists who can do realistic plein aire paintings so beautifully. I think if you paint what you love, it turns out.

Asked Teri (my sister and photographer extraordinaire) to bring her camera and take a new profile pic for my artists bio. She's so good with lighting! Is it weird that I actually like my wrinkles? Well, at least in this soft light.

Still working on Heron's for Tera's tattoo. She wants one thats flying now.

Traded photography session with Teri for a painted ladybug sign for her photo studio. One would think I would whip this out in a few minutes. Not so much. It would help if I would have picked up a plate and drawn around it....but no, I freehand the circle, thereby incurring tons of time spent correcting this little jag and that little jag. I often notice in my painting though, that 'simpl'e is actually more difficult than 'complicated'.

The Heron

I started out my morning by dropping off Elvis necklaces at one of my new retailers, Apparel For Two, in downtown Medford. The Elvis impersonator was making an appearance at 4:30 so she wanted to set up a display. I spent the rest of the day at Art du Jour Gallery, putting in my one day per month sitting at the gallery. I made a few sales, including one of my necklace and card sets, so that was good. I also FINALLY drew a heron for my oldest daughter, Tera. She's been asking me to do this for her probably for at least a year. She wants a heron tattoo because she used to fish with my parents, who were commercial fishermen, so it's sentimental to her.

I talked to my printer about the possibility of personalizing the pet tags and this is what he came up with. He said the font is really small, it's 6, but that they are readable. I like them. It's an option for my retailers, so I'm going to work on an order form. I also dropped some samples off at a pet store I'm hoping to work with. Wish me luck!! Tonight, glue, glue, glue, package, package, package Valentines necklace and card sets.

Hocking My Wares in Grants Pass

Today I visited Grants Pass with a friend of mine, Wibby, who grew up there. Nice to have a local human showing me around! I found an adorable boutique on "G" street to carry my necklaces. It's called Tierra del Sol and is at 129 SW G Street. Make sure you visit it if you are in Grants Pass. They had some other jewelry I was lusting after. Note to self; must spend commissions on business rather than jewelry! I also spoke with Bruk at Urban Renewal, they are going to carry my necklaces, but are moving this weekend, so I'll visit them next week and drop off a selection. On the way back to Jacksonville, we checked out the teeny, tiny town of Rogue River and found a little pet groomers, Personalized Grooming by Tarey, who are going to carry my pet tags.

All in all a productive day. I also walked Immy around Jville this morning with Jeanena, my local contact and friend for all things "Jacksonville". Then I ran into another friend and artist, Ron Moore, (fantastic photography!) who recommended I go by the Catholic Rectory. It's one of my favorite historic buildings. They were having it re-roofed and I was able to grab some of the old shingles to incorporate into my art work. I'm DYING to create!

Two New Retailers

Today I went to a few stores to place my Valentine necklace and card sets and take orders for the pet tags. I've been taking this part of my growth fairly slow, trying to determine which stores I want to be associated with, how to place my product where I get exposure but don't over-saturate the small town market. I'm happy with how the day went. My two new retailers are The Crown Jewel in Jacksonville, who will be carrying my Valentine sets and a collection of my pet tags. They have a really cute shop-dog who will probably sell them for me. :) Apparel For Two is the other store I will be working with. Adorable store in downtown Medford with a great collection of vintage and designer clothing. When I was visiting with the owner, Kim, I mentioned I had just come from Rogue Gallery and met the Elvis impersonator. Turns out, he's going to be at her store on Thursday. So I quickly pointed out the Elvis necklace I was wearing and offered to bring some to her store prior to Elvis' visit. Now I just need to make them by tomorrow. ;)

Elvis is in the House

The Rogue Gallery Elvis Exhibit starts tonight. Elvis is arriving at 3:30 and the reception starts at 4:30. This is the painting I've entered. Rogue Gallery is also carrying necklaces I made with the image.

Immy Hearts Art

I will also need to pose Immy and get some good shots for the etsy site. This picture cracks me up because I plucked her off of G's bed and made her model for me. Although she still posed when she saw the camera, you can tell she's sleepy and even modeling is not worth waking up for. What is that model quote from back in the 90's? Something like, "I don't get out of bed for less than $10.000". Maybe Immy will start coming up with demands. ;)

I find process almost more interesting than the finished product. Almost.

New Logo for cammydavis.com

I'm working on a new logo for the biz. When I started the art business, I thought I'd be all creative and call it "It's All About the Art", which in theory is a good idea since my focus is on taking images of my artwork and creating "affordable art" for purchase (such as necklaces, cards, etc). But...I realized it confused people. They seemed to remember my name more than "It's All About the Art" and...as an artist your name is on all of you paintings, etc. Plus, at this point, all of my websites are: cammydavis.com, cammydavis.youtube.com, cammydavis.etsy.com, cammydavis.blogspot.com. So...it makes sense to call the business cammydavis.com. God, even I am sick of my name now! ;) Anyway, as I'm coming up with new products, I've decided to make a logo that is similar to the sun and tree on a black background that I started with, but incorporates the name "cammydavis.com" and start incoporating the new logo into the new packaging.

Tutorial on Making Brackets for Heavy Paintings

Another riveting tutorial. ;) I've been thinking about this one for a while though. When I started making larger, heavier pieces of art, I wanted to figure out a way to hang them flush against the wall so that they were secure and I didn't need to worry about them falling on the kids. The art bracket systems for purchase were expensive and I wanted to offer my clients a better option for hanging art they purchased from me. So, I came up with this idea and have included a bracket with larger pieces I have sold. Hope it helps other artists as well.

Embracing Our DifferencesI

I just finished a painting I've been working on for a contest entitled Embracing Our Differences.

This is the start of the painting. This is different than work I typically do, but I loved the idea of the contest. Check out the photo below, they take 39 pieces of art focused on the theme and put them on billboard size structures throughout a park in Florida. I had to enter something, it's such a worthwhile celebration! I decided to use a Vespa and Harley because when I first got my Vespa, I was so surprised that the Harley riders would nod when they passed me, wave or flip the Peace sign. I loved it. I knew I was different and I'm sure in their eyes a scooter was a huge step down from a Harley, but they respected me. Love that! To me, that's what diversity is about, being different and enjoying it, but also seeing the ways that we are the same. 2012 Goals - I've been working on next years goals, trying to keep pushing myself, but also to figure out which ideas are worth pursuing and which are best to let go of. Here's what I came up with. May 2012 be my best year yet!

1) To have the business support itself.
2) To have my product in 25 retail stores
3) To approach one chain store/find out how to approach chain
4) 3 manufactured items, including distinctive/interesting packaging (bulk up to 100 per run)
5) 5 Festivals this year, all to be in the black
6) Submissions in 5 contests and 5 gallery shows
7) 6 exhibits (1-3 person shows) to include galleries and restaurants
8) To increase press exposure; 1 local feature, 1 "other" feature, a mention in 1 magazine
9) Increase youtube to 10 tutorials
10) Work on artist profile, photo shoot with Teri in summer

I've been working on my goals for 2012 and decided a good beginning would be a recap of 2011, goals met and goals missed. I had 3 goals for my art business in 2011. The first was to have my product in 10 retail stores and galleries by the end of the year. The 2nd was to have 3 exhibits of my art in galleries or restaurants. The 3rd was to start thinking along the lines of an item made from images of my art work (It's All About the Art) that I could eventually have someone else manufacture. I think art is a hard sell, especially in this economy. People may love art, but they tend to purchase things that they consider to be more practical. There is a great quote, which I can't remember, something about how art is even more important in a down economy because it gives people hope.

So how did I do with my goals? Goal One: 1. Revolution Gallery in Issaquah, carrying a few paintings, limited edition clocks and will begin carrying word art in March, 2. Knack in Portland, pulled work may consider doing product specific to pdx if they remain in business, 3. Sasquatch in Seattle, went out of business, 4. Willowcreek Gifts in Jacksonville, carrying necklace gift sets, magnets and cards, will carry pet tags when they are finished, 5. Gold Dust Cafe in Jacksonville, they went out of business, 6. Art du Jour Gallery in Medford, carrying art and cards, 7. Rogue Gallery in Medford, in holiday shop and just found out they are going to continue to sell my necklace/card gift sets year round, 8. Bluewater Artworks in Poulsbo, carrying my art and gift sets but are not opening now until Jan 7, 9. Thomas Lee Gallery in Ashland, carrying my necklace gift sets. So, that's nine but 3 went out of business, so I'm short on my goal, but happy with progress I made this year.

Goal Two: I had two exhibits in restaurants this year. Issaquah Coffee in Issaquah was my first. It went well and I sold a few paintings, including one to Firehouse 72, the new LEED Platinum firehouse in Issaquah. My 2nd was at Organic Natural Cafe in Medford. I have my work up for 3 months and have been rotating it monthly. Not sure of exposure, it's hard to calculate, but I haven't sold any paintings at this venue.

Goal Three: Magnets - I tried 3 different magnets that were manufactured by someone else with my design. Not a huge seller, so am not sure yet if I will continue working on this idea. I made one design custom for one of my retailers and they went out of business. So my lesson was anything custom needs to be paid for in advance.

Another area that I worked hard at but was not included in my goals were festivals. I did not have a great success with this, although consider the lessons I learned invaluable and am working on festival goals for next year. The festivals I did in 2011 were: Renton River Days, Renton Art Walk, Jacksonville Celebrates the Arts, Holiday at the Expo, Heart of Medford Holiday Market, Shoreline, Jacksonville Saturday Market, South Douglas County Festival of the Arts and Gig Harbor Arts Festival.

I also got 2nd place in an international design competition, which got some press and also had a few articles about my art. I got my website up and running, along with continuing my facebook art page, my blog and twitter. I also finished my degree (except that 2nd darn internship) and moved to a different state. I became a member of Art du Jour Gallery, Rogue Gallery, SOArtists and Riddle Art Guild.

I also worked on my tutorials on youtube. I have 3 at this point and one of them was monetized by youtube after it passed 10,000 views.

I think the biggest thing I did this year, was shoved my "shyness" behind me, told myself I was actually an extrovert ;) and started approaching galleries and retail stores, artists and art groups with a "no fear" attitude. Good recap of 2011 and now onto 2012. Time to set some high goals and then....make them happen!

Toughen Thy Skin

When I started this blog about two years ago, the idea was to figure out how to live a creative life, rather than returning to my work in escrow. I wanted it to be an honest look at what it takes to build a creative business, if it's possible, the growth and learning that goes on during the process, I hoped that other artists would gain some insight and hopefully offer some as well. Mostly I hoped that I would figure out a way to create a life from following my passion. So here is an honest look at a setback that feels like it's knocking me over, but in reality will be a huge learning experience. Except at this point, all I can feel is my Irish temper kicking in. I was doing a festival last summer at a local casino. I approached the hotel manager and asked if I could do a proposal for his lobby, since the walls were bare. My idea was to gift it to them in exchange for the exposure it would offer. To me, I very generous offer. At first they were ecstatic and surprised at the idea. Then, once I had submitted the proposal, the reply was that they had surprisingly similar proposals from a lot of artists. Hmm...perhaps mention that at the beginning rather than looking surprised at the idea. So, question to myself, would it be a good idea to approach another commercial establishment with this idea or better to get exposure in more traditional ways? My idea has been to approach this by thinking outside of the box. Not working this time. And yes....they did go with another artist. :(

Then they approached me about doing a piece of art for their 24 hour restaurant. Although that felt like a slap in the face and I was pretty leary about putting myself out there for them again, I decided to give it a shot. First meeting I was told they did not want anything too abstract, although they liked the feathers in my initial lobby proposal they were more interested in the circle of life concept. I also clarified whether they were requesting a similar proposal, meaning the art be gifted to them, they were not. So, this is what I created. FYI, these proposals are all done in photoshop and would look more dimensional painted.

They looked at it and said, "umm, we probably should have told you but we do not want green. Could you do something with a sun for the circle of life and a representation of our river running through the work. Please keep the idea of 7 slats to represent our casino, but break the painting into three pieces." So I sent them this.

Then they said, "we don't want blue" (would have been nice to mention that when they asked for a river), we don't want a literal river, more like a brushstroke, we want browns and reds. We want it more abstracted" So I sent them this. This one, btw, is my favorite. May have to paint it anyway, the feather is supposed to be the abstracted river they asked for. I think if this were actually painted (rather than photoshopped) it would be amazing. I've done other things in a variety of reds and it's gorgeous. The gold "circle of life" would be done with gold leaf so it had a burnished glow.

And this.

They sent me a painting of a brown and beige print they were putting on a different wall and said they wanted those colors and a black feather like the one in my lobby proposal. They also sent me a sketch of it laid out as above. I said let me clarify, "you want browns and beiges with a black feather, correct". They said, "well there are more colors in there than brown and beige". I photoshopped the exact piece of art they sent me and the exact feather I used in my lobby proposal. In effect, I gave them EXACTLY what they asked for. They came back and said, "we've decided we want to use metal art on the wall".

This is their "beautiful" restaurant. With my art photoshopped. They said, "perhaps we will work together in the future". I "politely" (at least compared to what I was thinking) replied that I would decline to work with them in the future. Not sure what the moral of my story is. Another disappointment on the way to a creative life? Need to handle disappointments better? Toughen thy skin? Maybe it is do not do commissioned pieces or at most submit one proposal, if they are not happy with it, end of story.

Vespa-Harley Night

It was a Vespa-Harley night again. Finally settled on colors and just have details left. Is my sun becoming a bit predictable? This is for a billboard contest celebrating diversity. I thought since Vespa-Harley wasn't a typical thing I would paint, I needed to put something that made it recognizable as my art, thus the textures and sun. :)

I'm working on a submission for a contest about diversity. My idea was to do a Vespa and Harley because when I got my Vespa, I was often surprised that the Harley riders would nod or do the "peace" sign at me when riding by. Still working on the colors. I'm used to using bright, bold colors, but I want the Vespa to be baby pink and the sky to actually look like a sky...hmmm...pastels and brights? Not sure yet what the outcome will be.

Still working on getting my studio, aka the garage, organized so I can create! Added a new shelf above the workbench and cleaned off the workbench (yes, this is clean). I don't think anyone has cleaned it since Grampa passed away which was about 10 years ago. Yikes!

This cupboard had two shelves in it so I added a bunch more. Just the right size for my plastic containers. It makes me so happy!

Organic Natural Cafe January Display

Texture as Focus

I think it's finished. I'm doing paintings right now where I'm focusing more on the texture and simplifying the painting. I'm interested to see if people respond well or prefer more painted surface. This is similar to a painting I did recently called Black Dandelion, where it was all about the grid of pattern in the background with a simple dandelion on top. I got really good reactions to it at last weekends show.

Painting in black and white. Totally different for me, but intriguing, I think. I may do more like this. I have an idea in my mind that I'm excited to start.

I just finished doing gift certificate cards for Issaquah Coffee. Each time I do something new, its such a learning process. This image was my top choice.

This image was my 2nd choice. The client said, "we'll skip the fireworks". Those are dandelions!!

And this is the one the client chose. I liked it with the branches overhanging the building, but he didn't. I see what he means, the building shows up much better in this image. Lesson learned, spend more time asking the client what he wants. Anyway, I think it turned out well and hope the clients were happy.

Just finished this painting. Of course, I asked Gramma what she thought of it. "It's my favorite one yet," (she says this upon each painting I complete), "but I think you should add more on the upper right." I think i learned my lesson on the last painting. Once I feel I'm done....just put the brush down! I like the negative space, although it's still busy with the texture, to me it gives the eye a break. Gonna leave it.

Well, after stumbling and second guessing myself, I decided to add more color to the painting, rather than subtracting. I did add a little bit of white to add some space to the bottom (where I had overworked the green). I think i am happy with the finished painting. It always takes me a few days to decide. I get used to seeing it from about a foot away while I'm painting it. Then when I step back and see the whole thing takes me a while to process. My walls are a constantly revolving gallery while i process. Poor Gramma!

Okay, this is midway into the painting, I painted a few more flower in and then I asked for input from Gramma (thinking I was finished and happy with it). She is so detail oriented. She said, the leaves are too little. She was right. But...I should know better than to overwork a painting.

So this is where I'm at now. Yes, the leaves needed to be larger, but now there is too much green. I'm going to set it aside and hope with fresh eyes in the morning it will either look better, or I can figure out how to save it. The problem is, not sure if you can tell from the photo, there is no underpainting or background. The white color is the texture. So, how to get rid of some of the overworked green without ruining the sketchy look I wanted? Would love input.

I am so drawn to graphic images. I found myself taking closeups of the geometric grids on buildings rather than the whole building. How cool is this one?

Today I turned in an application and left paintings to be juried at Art Du Jour in Medford. Great little gallery and Interior Design studio. Celebrate Jacksonville in the Art

This morning I walked Immy, as per usual and saw a little farmers market on the museum grounds in Jacksonville. I introduced myself to the artists who were showing their work. Turns out they have a little Saturday group that shows their work through the summer. They were all so welcoming and nice. I think I may join them on the 27th.

The following weekend is Labor Day and I will be doing Jacksonville Celebrates the Arts in the same location. After seeing their work, which was focused on the history of Jacksonville and seeing the weekend tourist crowd, I think I will update my artwork to meld history and abstract. For a while I've been pondering including famous buildings in my paintings via photoshop. I like the idea of the historic buildings contrasting with the bright colors I typically use.

So, tonight Immy and I walked around Jville and took photos of some of the historic buildings. I tried to put Immy on the porch in all the photos, you can barely see her though. I had to tie her to the porch post and then walk way across the street to get the whole building(s) into the frame. I also had a problem with cars since there was a concert at the Britt. So, I am going to pry myself out of bed really early tomorrow and try to get some more photos.

At this time I think I'm going to make necklaces and maybe some framed prints of the photoshoped images. I'm kind of excited at the possiblity. To make it even more fun (at least in my strange and bored mind) I'm going to call the series Celebrate Jacksonville in the Art. I wonder how it will be received. Hm..

The photo I'm attaching today is the Nunan House which is right behind my Gramma's home. If you walked into the backyard of the Nunan House and turned left you'd be in my Gramma's backyard. Well, you'd have to climb a fence and fight off the wicked guard dog (Immy). ;)

Updated Website and New Paintings

I'm so happy! I finally figured out how to update the "gallery" page on my website to show more of my paintings. My web designer seemed to think this would be an easy thing for me to do. Not so much. But I figured it out. Check out the new look of cammydavis.com.

I also just finished a few paintings and uploaded them to etsy. Nice to have some new work to post. I've been so busy with Gramma that it's been hard to find time for my art. Hopefully things will mellow out and I can refocus. I guess that's part of being a starving artist, doing what I need to in order to survive.

I've been working on the studio today and also started applying texture to some new pieces. I love the in-process images. My goal for this week is to contact one retail store or gallery per day. I'm on track! My long term goal is to get in 10 retail stores by the end of the year. I'm up to 3.

It also just dawned on me that tomorrow is Friday. The Issaquah Art Walk. I wish I could be there. I have to remember to get up and post the coupon and some photos again in the morning.

I also worked on clearing out Gramma's garage to turn into my art studio. Sneeze. Tons of dust bunnies! I can't wait to get it set up and get creative again. I am used to sitting in my living room and painting but I don't want to put gramma's house through that, so am chomping at the bit to get to work.

The Starving Artist

I just moved to Jacksonville, Oregon with the purpose of taking care of my Gramma so she does not need to live in a nursing home. Beyond loving my Gramma and wanting in some small way to pay her back for everything she's done for me, I also was "bribed" by my parents with the offer of Gramma's garage as my art studio. I'm pretty excited. Reading back from when I started this blog a year a half ago, my goal that I couldn't even picture, was to live a creative life. Slowly I'm getting there.

Also, quite a life change. I just got back from riding my Vespa (to save money on gas) to the Grocery Outlet (otherwise known to me as the cheap-ass-grocery-store) and realized I have become a starving artist!

But, on the subject of my art. I have 29 paintings hanging in Issaquah Coffee for the month of August and half of September. Very exciting for me, it's the first time I've had so many paintings hanging in one place. And, keeping my goal of supporting myself as an artist in mind, I bravely contacted the Issaquah Press and requested they do an article. They were receptive (shock) and are going to interview and photograph me on Aug. 18th. I'm excited, except for the photograph part. The "starving" part of my goal has not affected my body yet... :( It's hard to put myself out there, but I try to think of cammydavis.com as a separate entity from myself. It's the only way I can try and promote myself! Ooh, I also got the DDI Magazine today and saw my 2nd place project in print. Pretty cool!!

Knack in Portland is now carrying a selection of my art work. Leigh, the owner, liked to display artists work in groups, so the pics are the ones she chose to display. I loved her store. So many little shops/galleries have so much merchandise I get overwhelmed. Leigh does it differently, she likes to keep it fresh by bringing in new merchandise and keeps the store crisp and uncluttered.
